Cultural Bird Mask.

The bird biodiversity in Panama checks in with a reported 1002 species! This mask depicts a specie of bird that inhabits the Darien rainforest.

Not so long ago the Embera and Wounaan people of the Darien Jungle relied solely on the land and rivers that surrounded their stilt huts, for their every need. Today, deforestation, farming and outsiders encroaching on their forest existence has changed their way of life.

Rising up to the challenges of a modern lifestyle, the artisans have maintained and in some cases combined modern conveniences with traditional cultural skills to create works of art, sought after by collectors around the world.

This is a cultural mask that was traditionally used by the village jaibana (shaman). Though ritual practices still continue, the forest lifestyle is quickly changing just like their cultural art. This mask is truly a treasure of history and culture.
