Monkey Mask: Emberá Palm Fiber Art E9

Cultural Mask.

This mask depicts one of the six species of New World Monkeys found in Panama. The Embera and Wounaan tribes once resided in the dense rainforest in an area known as the Darien Gap.

Not so long ago these forest people, relied solely on the land and rivers that surrounded their stilt huts, for their every need. Today, deforestation, farming and outsiders encroaching on their forest existence has changed their way of life.

Rising up to the challenges of a modern lifestyle, the artisans have maintained and in some cases combined modern conveniences with traditional cultural skills to create works of art, sought after by collectors around the world.

This is a cultural mask that was traditionally used by the village jaibana (shaman). Though ritual practices still continue, the forest lifestyle is quickly changing just like their cultural art. This mask is truly a treasure of history and culture.
